Martin(2024) - "It completely falters in its execution, failing to live up to its potential."

  • Directed by: AP Arjun
  • Written by: Arjun Sarja
  • Starring by: Dhruva Sarja, Vaibhavi Shandilya, Anveshi Jain, Sukrutha Wagle, Achyuth Kumar, Nikitin Dheer
  • Genres: Action, Drama, Thriller
  • Language: Kannada

Plot Overview:

Martin tells the story of Arjun, an Indian Navy officer, who is captured by the Pakistani police during a mission. He is injected with a drug that erases his memory, leaving him confused about his past. Meanwhile, the mystery surrounding an international gangster named Martin unfolds. The film poses questions about Arjun's connection to Martin and what secrets lie in the containers that are pivotal to the story. The film explores whether Arjun will recover his memory and uncover the truth about his identity and Martin's role.

Performances:

  • Dhruva Sarja: Dhruva gives a decent performance, but his portrayal feels limited by the weak script. His role as a villain, in particular, stands out as the more compelling aspect of his character.
  • Vaibhavi Shandilya: Her role as the heroine is underwhelming and doesn’t add much to the overall narrative.
  • Rest of the Cast: The supporting cast, including Anveshi Jain, Sukrutha Wagle, and Achyuth Kumar, deliver average performances, but they lack depth and meaningful involvement in the plot.

Technical Aspects:

  • Direction: AP Arjun’s direction is lackluster, failing to elevate the film beyond a generic action thriller. The execution lacks clarity and vision.
  • Screenplay: The screenplay is weak, with pacing issues and a lack of coherence that detracts from the overall viewing experience.
  • Cinematography & Visuals: The visuals fail to impress, and the cinematography doesn’t offer anything innovative or striking.
  • Music & BGM: The background score is too loud, overshadowing scenes and becoming a distraction. The songs are forgettable and don’t contribute to the film's emotional or action beats.
  • Editing: The editing is a major flaw, with abrupt cuts that disrupt the flow of the film and diminish its impact.

Strengths:

  • Action Sequences: The action scenes are the only redeeming quality, providing some level of entertainment amidst an otherwise poorly constructed film.
  • Dhruva Sarja’s Villainous Role: Dhruva’s portrayal of a villain is a strong point, even if it’s not fully realized due to the weak writing.

Weaknesses:

  • Story & Screenplay: The plot lacks depth, and the screenplay is disjointed, failing to maintain any narrative consistency or tension.
  • Direction: The film lacks proper direction, with AP Arjun unable to translate a potentially intriguing story into an engaging film.
  • BGM & Sound: The overly loud background music detracts from the viewing experience, overpowering key moments instead of enhancing them.
  • Editing: Poor editing choices affect the film’s pacing and disrupt the flow of the story.
  • KGF Influence: The film seems to be inspired by the KGF style but fails to justify the heavy tone and grandeur. The story doesn’t support such an approach, making it feel forced.
  • Note: Telugu dubbing version makes it even worse with the half-hearted dubbing

My Personal Take On Cinema:

Martin is a movie that sounds good on paper but fails in its execution. The concept has potential, but the film doesn’t deliver on its premise. The weak story, poor direction, and disjointed screenplay make it difficult to engage with. Dhruva Sarja’s efforts, particularly in his villainous role, aren’t enough to save the film from its numerous flaws. The KGF-style approach feels unnecessary, and the loud BGM and bad editing only worsen the viewing experience. This is the kind of movie that may have looked good in concept but falters in its execution, making it hard to recommend.
