Viswam(2024) - "Bad experience"

  • Directed by: Sreenu Vaitla
  • Written by: Bhanu Nandu, Gopimohan, Sreenu Vaitla
  • Starring by: Gopichand, Kavya Thapar, Jisshu Sengupta, Naresh, Sunil
  • Genres: Action, Comedy, Drama
  • Language: Telugu

Plot Overview:

Viswam revolves around Gopi (Gopichand), who travels from Italy to Hyderabad for the love of his life, Sameera (Kavya Thapar). However, a series of dramatic incidents reveals Gopi’s true identity as Viswam. The plot unravels the reasons behind Viswam assuming the identity of Gopi and his mission to save a young girl, Darshana, from terrorists. How are Viswam and Darshana connected? What twists await Viswam in his life? The film attempts to answer these questions while juggling between action, drama, and comedy.

Performances:

  • Gopichand: While Gopichand’s screen presence is solid, his character feels underutilized in the film. He isn’t given enough to showcase his full potential, which is disappointing for fans of the action star.
  • Kavya Thapar: Her role is extremely limited, with little importance or development, making her character feel secondary in the narrative.
  • Jisshu Sengupta, Naresh, Sunil: The supporting cast is present but doesn’t offer anything noteworthy. They are just part of the story, without much impact.

Technical Aspects:

  • Direction: Sreenu Vaitla’s direction lacks focus and fails to engage the audience. While Viswam is slightly better than his previous film Amar Akbar Antony, it still doesn’t reach the expected standards of storytelling and direction.
  • Music & BGM: The music is forgettable, offering no memorable tracks or impactful background score. This is a significant drawback in an action-drama film where music could have elevated key moments.
  • Cinematography: The visuals are decent but not enough to save the film from its other technical flaws.
  • Production Values: The production quality is average, with nothing particularly remarkable.

Strengths:

  • None: The film doesn’t have any standout strengths. The story, performances, direction, and technical aspects all fall flat, offering little to keep the audience engaged.

Weaknesses:

  • Story & Screenplay: The screenplay is weak and lacks coherence, making it hard to stay invested in the narrative. The story itself is generic and predictable.
  • Direction: Sreenu Vaitla fails to bring life to the film, resulting in poor pacing and execution.
  • Music: The forgettable soundtrack and lackluster background score hurt the overall experience.
  • Comedy: Comedy is one of Sreenu Vaitla’s trademarks, but in Viswam, the comedic elements fall flat and fail to generate any laughs.

My Personal Take On Cinema:

Viswam is a poorly executed film that doesn’t justify its effort. The writing is full of flaws, and the direction is weak, failing to capitalize on the potential of the storyline. Gopichand, who is usually a reliable actor, is wasted in this role, which is unfortunate as it could have been a turning point for his career. The supporting cast is underused, and the music doesn’t add any value to the film. Though Viswam is a slight improvement over Sreenu Vaitla’s previous film Amar Akbar Antony, it still lacks the potential to be a success. Gopichand needs to carefully choose better projects moving forward, as continuing in this direction could harm his career prospects.
