Plot

Naive clerk Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) is sent on a mission to obtain Count Orlok's (Bill Skarsgård) signature on a property deed. However, things take a dark turn when Hutter realizes Orlok’s supernatural nature and his obsession with Hutter’s wife, Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp). A tale of seduction, obsession, and supernatural horror unfolds in this visually immersive yet narratively flawed homage to the classic silent film.

Performances

  • Lily-Rose Depp: Struggles to convey depth, often reduced to wide-eyed expressions that fail to capture the weight of Ellen’s character.
  • Nicholas Hoult: Mediocre as the naive Hutter, lacking chemistry with his on-screen wife.
  • Bill Skarsgård: Underwhelming as Count Orlok, buried under zombie-pirate prosthetics and failing to embody the menace or charisma of the iconic vampire.
  • Willem Dafoe: Relegated to a supporting role, but still brings gravitas as a Van Helsing-esque character.

Technical Aspects

  • Cinematography: Jarin Blaschke’s nearly colorless visuals evoke the grandeur of Flemish paintings, creating a visually stunning aesthetic.
  • Music: Mark Korven’s score is haunting but over-relied upon for creating tension.
  • Production Design: The costumes and sets are meticulously crafted, contributing to the immersive experience.
  • Editing: The unconventional editing style and quick cuts fail to deliver impactful scares.

Strengths

  • Stunning cinematography
  • Beautifully detailed production design
  • Faithful homage to the original

Weaknesses

  • Pretentious dialogue
  • Weak performances from the leads
  • Lack of true horror and menace
  • Pacing issues

My Personal Take on Cinema

Robert Eggers has established himself as a master of atmosphere, but with Nosferatu, he seems to have focused more on aesthetics than on storytelling. While the visual elements are undeniably gorgeous, the film lacks the emotional depth and tension that made the original so iconic. Bill Skarsgård’s portrayal of Count Orlok feels more like a mangy ex-boyfriend than a fearsome supernatural entity. Lily-Rose Depp and Nicholas Hoult fail to elevate their roles, leaving the audience disconnected from the central narrative. In the end, Nosferatu is a visually striking but emotionally hollow reimagining of a horror classic.
