Plot Summary
Set in the picturesque village of Adluru, Telangana, Gandhi Tatha Chettu is a heartfelt story about a young girl named Gandhi, whose values are deeply shaped by her grandfather, Ramachandraya, a devoted follower of Mahatma Gandhi. When a chemical factory threatens to destroy their village, including a cherished tree on their ancestral land, Ramachandraya stands his ground. After his passing, Gandhi takes up his mission, facing mounting pressure from the villagers and the minister’s spokesperson, Satish.
The story is a simple yet effective commentary on the importance of nature, Gandhian values, and standing up for what one believes in, even when faced with overwhelming opposition.
Highlights
Sukriti’s Performance
Sukriti Veni Bandreddi steps into the role of Gandhi with commendable sincerity. While her expressions and body language suit the role, the dubbing proves to be a major drawback. The lack of emotional connection in her voice dilutes the impact of her performance. Despite this, she manages to convey the innocence and determination of a young girl fighting for her beliefs.
Supporting Cast
- Chakrapani Ananda as Ramachandraya delivers a heartfelt performance, embodying the wisdom and resilience of a true Gandhian.
- Nehal Anand Kumkuma and Rag Mayur offer adequate support, but their characters lack the emotional depth to leave a lasting impact.
Direction & Screenplay
Padmavathi Malladi opts for a simple and straightforward narrative, which works well for the subject matter. However, the screenplay is predictable, often treading familiar ground without adding any fresh perspective. The pacing is slow, making the film feel stretched at times. While the intent is noble, the execution lacks the emotional punch needed to truly resonate.
Music & Technical Aspects
- Background Score: The BGM effectively enhances emotional moments, though it remains unmemorable overall.
- Cinematography: The visuals capture the beauty of rural Telangana, adding authenticity to the narrative.
- Production Values: The budget has been wisely utilized, maintaining a polished look throughout the film.
Strengths
✅ Strong thematic focus on Gandhian values and environmental awareness
✅ Visual authenticity in showcasing village life
Weaknesses
❌ Disconnected dubbing for the lead role
❌ Predictable screenplay with minimal surprises
❌ Slow pacing that tests patience at times
❌ Lack of emotional depth in some crucial scenes
My Personal Take on Cinema
Gandhi Tatha Chettu is a thought-provoking film that attempts to revive and emphasize the principles of truth, non-violence, and environmental conservation. It serves as a gentle reminder of how essential it is to hold onto our roots and protect nature. However, the film’s emotional impact is hindered by its slow narration and lack of compelling character arcs.
Sukriti shows promise, but with better voice modulation and emotional depth, her portrayal could have left a stronger impression. Chakrapani Ananda, on the other hand, shines through with his dignified performance, offering the film its most heartfelt moments.
While the climax leans towards melodrama, it does succeed in driving home the message. If you appreciate films that deal with social themes and don’t mind a leisurely-paced narrative, Gandhi Tatha Chettu could be worth a watch.
